The Secret to Unlocking Your Toddler’s Language: Just OWL!

As parents, we are programmed to be "fixers." When our children struggle to open a snack or find a word, our instinct is to jump in and do it for them. In the world of Early Intervention (EI), we often find that the most effective way to help a child speak is actually to stop talking!

To stop talking?! I know, I know but hear me out…

To help your child become a confident communicator, speech therapists use an evidence-based strategy called The OWL Technique. This approach is a cornerstone of the Hanen Centre’s "It Takes Two to Talk" program, which is backed by decades of research showing that children learn best when they lead the interaction.

So What is OWL?

OWL is an acronym for three simple (but surprisingly difficult!) steps: Observe, Wait, and Listen.

1. Observe

Take a moment to really watch what your child is saying or doing. Their actions show you exactly what’s capturing their imagination right now.

  • The Goal: By truly tuning in to your child’s world, you gain a front-row seat to their unique interests and everything they are trying to share with you.

2. Wait

This is the most powerful tool in a Speech-Language Pathologist’s "bag of tricks." Providing a purposeful pause allows your child the time they need to process their play and initiate an interaction with you on their own terms. To create the perfect environment for communication, try "setting the stage":

  • Stay silent for a full 5–10 seconds to give their brain time to process.

  • Lean in and use an expectant facial expression to show you are waiting for their turn.

3. Listen

When your child finally makes a move, listen to everything. This isn't just listening for clear words. It’s listening for:

  • Vocalizations: Grunts, babbles, or sighs.

  • Non-Verbal Cues: A pointed finger, a tug on your sleeve, or an intentional look at an object.

  • The Goal: Treating these small actions as "words" helps your child realize the power they have; e.g. "When I make a sound, something happens!"

How to Use OWL in San Antonio: Daily Examples

You don’t need a therapy room to practice this. The best learning can happen during your daily routines in the San Antonio community.

  • At the Playground: Whether you are at Phil Hardberger Park or Mitchell’s Landing Playground, put your child in the swing and wait. Observe if they kick their legs or look at you or if they say a sound, say, "Oh, you want a push! Ready, set... (Wait again)... GO!"

  • At the DoSeum: While exploring the different sections try to observe what peeks their interest. When they find a spot/toy they like, this is your chance to practice "waiting". Observe what they are reaching for before you jump in to name the objects.

  • During Snack Time: Give them a little bit of their preferred snack, then wait. Observe them reaching for more or making a sound before offering the next piece and modeling some language like ‘more’, ‘eat’, or even name of the snack!

Your 5-Minute Challenge

Today, choose one activity, it doesn’t have to be fancy or planned. We want this to be as easy as possible for you to implement. You can choose activities like putting on shoes or eating lunch, and commit to the "10-Second Wait."After you ask a question or show them an object, count slowly to ten in your head before you speak again. You might be surprised at how much your child has to say when they finally have the space to say it!

When to Seek Help: Recognizing the Signs

While every child develops on their own timeline, research shows that early intervention is the most effective way to support long-term communication success. If you are practicing these strategies and still feel concerned, here are some things to look out for:

  • By 12 Months: Not using gestures (pointing, waving) or babbling.

  • By 18 Months: Difficulty imitating sounds or preferring gestures over vocalizations or word approximations.

  • By 24 Months: A vocabulary of fewer than 50 words or not yet putting two words together (e.g., "Mama up").
